No fewer than thirteen passengers killed and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” declared the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
