Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of major blasts rocking Tehran, following claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preemptive military action.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of thick smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency stated, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Background: Rising Tensions and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Major developments preceding this strike include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Prior to the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They dismissed assertions about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
These developments remains fast-moving, with further updates anticipated as the situation develops.
