Guitar Hero at 20 – How a Plastic Axe Bridged the Gap Between Rock Generations

Marking two decades after Guitar Hero first launched across the Atlantic, giving players everywhere the tools to become a rock star. Not literally, though you'd be hard-pressed telling that anyone who's mastered Free Bird’s lengthy instrumental break before a packed living-room audience.

Developed by the developers, Guitar Hero provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to follow coloured notes scrolling down the display synchronized to a song. Each riff corresponded to particular chords, creating the sensation of a genuine performance.

Harmonix had already tried its hand with rhythm games before partnering with the publisher, later acquired by Activision in 2006. Collaboratively, they laid the foundations for an unlikely massively profitable franchise that had a remarkable impact on numerous musicians featured, showcasing decades-old groups to a new generation of gaming enthusiasts.

Michael Dornbrook, former COO from the developer, remembers the initial financial challenges of licensing the songs – despite the fact initial releases mostly used rerecorded tracks.

“We reproduced all the music because the cost prohibitive,” he says. “Even with the necessary permissions alone, it proved extremely difficult. We couldn’t get acts such as legendary groups – RedOctane had virtually no money, and our team was fairly certain it would fail. But once Guitar Hero took off, and record sales airtime increased, all artists desired to be in.”

He adds: “Among the amazing things was the number of parents reached out and thanked us for exposing their children to the music they adored. It became an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Finds Younger Fans

Northern Irish group one featured act included their track in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Guitarist Paul Mahon recalls how the series brought older hits back into vogue: “Guitar Hero provided a larger, new demographic. Generally such music was seen as music that was past it, however when it was included in the title and teenagers were finding it, abruptly it became trendy. This validated it, eliminating the ‘dad rock’ label. It provided all our music renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the band's first record remained unreleased in the US, so Guitar Hero served as a primary platform of discovery for the group during their a North American tour supporting the rock giants. “The roadies had on the song on the tour bus, and several recognized us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Major Band Titles and Lasting Impact

Rock’s heavyweight names quickly capitalised on the game's success, with Aerosmith, Metallica and others starring in dedicated spin-off titles that focused on each band’s catalogue and associated lore, imagery and legendary status. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, it was said to have made the group greater revenue compared to their records. It moved more than half a million units in its first week, and sales of Aerosmith’s music rose significantly at a time as the industry was already collapsing.

The series still motivates nimble-fingered dedication within the community. Recently, a streamer completed a remarkable feat featuring Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough anthem made popular by Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a no-cost alternative with almost identical mechanics and extensive customisation options. The song is difficult enough on expert mode, let alone played at increased tempo while hitting a single one of the thousands of cues. They stated requiring months of practice to accomplish.

“Guitar Hero is a fun, imaginary experience. Just as with other games, it doesn't imply you should use a real gun and enlist,” notes musician the artist.

The band previously completed a successful tour when Through the Fire and Flames was featured on Guitar Hero III, yet he explains it turned them into widely recognized. “I remember our distributors informing us that our selling albums like crazy,” he says. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we performed just before top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, the band's visibility via the game was so immense that it risked overshadow everything else accomplishments. Last year, the track featured in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “In the past I felt otherwise, but now I accept it,” he admits. “If you only listen to one DragonForce song, it’s totally cool – each person has their own musical journey and I'm pleased we’ve been part in fans' experiences”.

Enduring Impact of a Plastic Guitar

The best promotion, whether it’s for automobiles, apparel or video games, extends beyond mere transactions – it inspires a longing. Was the game able to harness this? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” he confirms. “The excitement of performing as a music icon on the stage. From day one, the creators believed humans have a natural human desire to make music, and they wanted to leverage innovation to allow people to participate”.

Most installments were released in just a five-year period between 2005 and 2010, including spin-offs like DJ Hero, complete with a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, corporate focus on peripherals died down, except for a short-lived revival several years later.

Titles such as the fan project and Fortnite Festival have kept the community active, and there’s set to be a new product from the founders on the way. A new studio has entered production on its debut rhythm-based title. The initial creators are both involved as special advisers. Is the world prepared to welcome a new entry following the classic?

“Our team believed such titles might become similar to sports games allowing annual releases,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much new music it could remain perennially popular, so I’ve always been optimistic. There’s no reason for it to continue with new generations.”
