A trader profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the leader would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the hours before Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that the president had been apprehended.

One account, which became a member recently and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

But these probabilities had jumped to 11% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the early hours of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in betting activity right before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.

A handful of other platform users also made large payouts from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

A new rule presented on Monday aims to prohibit federal workers from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in recent years, with users able to predict everything from sports outcomes to political events.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the previous administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market space.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
